Why Youtube Sucks!!
Aren't you as pissed as me when you scroll on amazon for a product and see its advertisement when you scroll on youtube or any other social media platform?
But according to me, this is a minor issue, What I am going to walk you guys through is a fucking nightmare.
I say Youtube is the very fucking reason we see Narendra Modi in power. Amit Shah and Narendra Modi have cracked how to capitalize on fucked-up algorithms of youtube.
Whenever you see two or three videos or posts of the same category for whatever reason, your screen starts to get cluttered with videos from the same category. Because of this, after a certain point, you won't be able to know another side of the story, because Shah and Modiji are sharing videos of their heroism brilliantly.
Understand, this is not a one-step process. Initially, they will use the money to sponsor videos on your screen; most of us have to watch it because we don't have a premium.
Secondly, you will be carefully bombarded with cleverly crafted videos and clutter your recommendations with the same.
And then you are officially a Desh Bhakt!!
Let me give an example. I came across a video from Quint explaining How Rahul Gandhi's Speech was edited and used by BJP leaders to defame him. An ordinary person who does not have leisure time like me to search for good content is more likely to watch the video shared everywhere.
I think apart from Whatsapp. Youtube is also responsible for spreading fake news as an average person is set to receive only one side of the story. And usually, an Indian person spends a hefty 48 hours a month watching youtube says a recent survey so that the results could be pretty staggering, Youtube in a way, has the power to change governments, sell products and whatnot. You just need an excellent youtube strategy.
So What can you do?
I will suggest users start searching good content and refine your recommendations and try keeping a balance of both sides, which is not easy with current algorithms but can be achieved.
Creators should also try to create captions and hashtags which suit a broad audience.
Youtube should work on its recommendations and plan ways to curb fake news. They can create a separate section were opposite genre videos are in option.
